The Utah division of wildlife resources has released video footage showing fish being loaded onto a plane and then dropped into their new home, a lake in the state’s Boulder mountain region.

Utah and other states across the US have been restocking lakes for decades. Before the 1950s, fish were loaded into milk cans and drawn by horses to remote areas. Plane drops are much quicker, cost-effective, and they’re supposed to be less stressful for the fish.

The fish include rainbow trout, tiger trout, splake, and other fish that are specifically raised for fishing. They’re dropped into fish-less lakes that don’t have any natural reproduction, and therefore they don’t affect any native fish populations.

The planes hold hundreds of kilograms of water, and they can drop 35,000 fish in one flight. According to experts, the fish are small and released along with water, which means that they survive their airplane drop without injury.
