Spacecraft gets to the Sun

The Parker Solar Probe is a spacecraft. A probe is a spacecraft that flies without people. Solar means that a thing can work from the Sun. People from NASA build the Parker Solar Probe. It starts its journey to the Sun in 2018.

The spacecraft flies through the Sun’s atmosphere last week. The Sun’s atmosphere is called the corona. People can see it as a circle of light.

It is the first time in history when a spacecraft gets so close to the Sun. Scientists are very happy. They will learn many new things about  the Sun and the universe, too.

The spacecraft will get as close as 6.9 million kilometers from the center of the Sun. Its speed will be 690,000 kilometers per hour.

The work to do this costs 1.5 billion dollars.

Difficult words: journey (when you travel from one place to another), atmosphere (the area around a planet), universe (space with all the stars, planets, and other objects).
