World’s largest copper mine – level 3

14-02-2023 15:00

The Atacama desert runs across northern Chile, and it’s home to both incredible natural beauty and intense industry.

The Chuquicamata mine is almost five kilometers long and 914 meters deep, and it is the largest open-pit copper mine in the world. Workers take a half an hour to get down to dig minerals to power the world’s electric infrastructure.

After one hundred years of operation, people still find new layers of copper. Extraction is greater than before because of ambitious production plans. Globally, the copper demand is growing, especially because of renewable energy and lithium battery usage.

Chile is one of the largest copper producers in the world, and copper is the country’s future.

Difficult words: open-pit (a mining method to find rocks and minerals near the surface of the land), ambitious (a plan or attempt that needs great effort), lithium (a soft silver-white metal).
