AirTags and safety – level 3
15-12-2022 07:00
Two women sued Apple; they said their former partners used the company’s AirTag devices to track their whereabouts.
An AirTag is a small tracking device, slightly larger than a coin. People can attach it to keys, wallets, or backpack to locate lost items. However, privacy experts and police say that some people have used them for criminal and malicious purposes, such as to stalk.
The women called AirTags the weapon of choice of stalkers and abusers, and they say that the device has been linked to several murders this year. One of the women said that her ex-boyfriend placed the device into the wheel of a tire on her car, and he disguised it with a sharpie marker.
Apple didn’t immediately respond to the lawsuit; however, earlier this year, the company added more safeguards to the device to reduce unwanted tracking.
Difficult words: whereabouts (the place where a person or thing is), sharpie marker (a type of marker with long lasting ink), safeguard (a type of protection).
