Maasai Olympics – level 3

14-12-2022 07:00

On Saturday, hundreds of people gathered at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro for the Maasai Olympics.

The event is an alternative rite of passage to protect wildlife, and conservationists promote it. It has a great benefit to the community because young men focus on physical training to win medals and prize money instead of lion hunts. They compete in games including spear throw, athletics, and high jump.

In Kenya, around 2,000 lions remain, and the biggest threat to them and other carnivores is human conflicts. To curb the practice of killing lions, Maasai cultural leaders worked with conservationists to create the Maasai Olympics. According to them, the program has had a huge impact on the lion population. Kenya is one of the few areas in Africa outside of protected areas where the lion population is stable or growing.

Difficult words: rite of passage (a ceremony that marks an important stage in someone’s life), spear (a weapon you throw with a sharp blade), curb (to control or limit something).
