Scientists who are researching the Arctic region from the Ny-Aalesund research station in Norway are having problems.
They need to work fast because the area is changing faster than anywhere else in the world. The Arctic is heating up four times faster than the rest of the world, and on the Svalbard archipelago, temperatures are rising up to seven times the global average. Higher temperatures cause sea ice to melt and Arctic animals, such as polar bears, change their behavior. Melting ice and permafrost cause damage to buildings in the region, and research sites are becoming more difficult to reach.
Scientists are hurrying to understand the impact of the changes in the region on the future of the planet.
Difficult words: archipelago (a group of many islands), melt (when ice or snow changes into water), permafrost (frozen ground).
