Electric tuk-tuks – level 3

18-05-2023 07:00

Sri Lanka is planning to convert 500,000 petrol three-wheelers to electric three-wheelers within five years, in a bid to tackle the country’s energy crisis and boost its economic recovery.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is supporting the project, which will involve an incubation phase to test the conversion process, a demonstration phase to support conversions, and an acceleration phase to encourage conversions through concessional financing and infrastructure development.

The project aims to support drivers who were left jobless due to the government’s 2022 decision to ban the import of petrol vehicles. The incubation phase will convert 200 petrol three-wheelers to electric three-wheelers, with priority given to applicants whose livelihoods depend on a single three-wheeler.

Difficult words: incubation (a process of development), concessional financing (financing made on more favorable terms than could be obtained in the marketplace), livelihood (the way someone earns the money he needs to pay for food, a place to live, clothing, and so on).
