Forecasts in Portugal predict that the skies will be obscured by smoke particles due to Canada’s ongoing wildfires, which are now affecting Europe.

Satellite images released by NASA show a vast plume of smoke and soot stretching across the Atlantic Ocean from Quebec. The smoke reached the Azores islands on Sunday and Western Europe on Monday, and it affected countries like Spain, France, and Portugal. Unlike the smoke in the United States that caused hazardous air quality, the smoke in Europe is higher in the atmosphere, at around 1,100 meters and above. Climate agencies suggest that this smoke may result in vibrant sunrises and sunsets. France experienced a high concentration of ash particles on Wednesday.

While Europe may be relatively unaffected, more than 140 communities in Canada are currently under air quality alerts, with the number of wildfires increasing. The situation remains concerning as the fires show no signs of abating.
