Dutch government bans phones in schools – level 1
10-07-2023 07:00
The Dutch government says that students cannot use mobile phones, tablets, or smartwatches in classrooms. This rule starts from 1 January 2024.
This rule will help students focus. But they can still use these devices if they really need to. For example, for digital skills lessons or medical reasons. The Education Minister, Robbert Dijkgraaf, says that mobile phones are not good for classrooms. They disturb students. Research shows this.
The ban is an agreement between the government, schools, and other groups. Schools can decide how to do the ban. If it doesn’t work well by the summer of 2024, there will be stricter laws.
Difficult words: disturb (to stop someone from working, sleeping, and so on), ban (an official stop), law (rules of a country).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What strategies do you think schools should implement to ensure the effectiveness of this ban?
