The true cost of food – level 2

04-08-2023 07:00

Discount supermarket Penny in Germany asked customers to pay more money for some food to make them aware of the true cost of food production.

Germans paid only 11.1% of their household budget for food, less than people in the EU usually pay. But cheap food often leads to high environmental costs. Penny charged customers for selected products, and the company considered climate, health, soil, and water costs. The extra money which Penny makes will go to sustainable farming projects. The supermarket expected lower sales because of inflation and higher prices.

Experts will study the impact of Penny’s campaign on consumers.

Difficult words: household budget (how much money a family has for spending), sustainable (something what can last for a long time without a negative impact), inflation (the price of money).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the expected outcomes of the study that will be conducted on the impact of Penny's campaign on consumer behavior?
