China fog – level 3

02-01-2024 15:00

Shanghai’s well-known landmarks vanished behind dense fog during the year-end holiday, causing concerns about potential transport disruptions.

The weather bureau issued a red warning for fog that spans from Hab province in the north to Shanghai in the south and lasts over 24 hours. This marked Shanghai’s first red fog warning since 2017. Residents were surprised by the obscured cityscape, with key structures like the Shanghai Center Tower and Oriental Pearl Tower becoming barely visible. The fog led to the temporary suspension of city ferries, highway sections, and a bridge to a container port. Widespread flight delays occurred, exceeding 600 flights in various cities. The severe weather, attributed to high humidity and poor atmospheric diffusion, was expected to improve as a cold wave swept across China, concluding a year marked by climate extremes, including cold snaps, scorching heat, and intense storms.

Difficult words: disruption (disturbance or problems), atmospheric diffusion (spreading of pollutants in the air), cold snap (a period of very cold weather).
