Farmers in Europe protest – level 3

19-03-2024 15:00

The European Commission, led by President Ursula von der Leyen, is proposing revisions to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in response to widespread farmer protests across Europe.

These revisions aim to reduce governmental control over EU farmers and provide them with greater flexibility to comply with environmental regulations. The protests, which have occurred in countries like Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, are primarily against EU regulations on climate change, imports from non-EU countries, and production costs. The Commission believes that the proposed changes strike a balance between supporting sustainable farming practices and addressing the concerns of farmers. Additionally, the revisions include measures to improve the position of EU farmers in the food supply chain.

Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of these proposals in supporting farmers amidst various challenges and expressed confidence that they were developed in collaboration with stakeholders, Member States, and Members of the European Parliament.

Difficult words: comply (to follow rules or standards), stakeholder (an individual or group with an interest or concern in the matter at hand).
