Women in Brazil protest – level 2
20-06-2024 07:00
In Sao Paulo, many women protested against a new bill in Brazil’s Congress.
This bill would treat abortions after 22 weeks as murder and give six to 20 years in prison. The protesters marched on Paulista Avenue with banners against the bill. They called it very bad for women’s rights. People of all ages shouted, ‘A child is not a mother, a rapist is not a father’. In Brazil, abortion is allowed only if there is rape, problems during pregnancy, or danger to the mother’s life. Religious lawmakers supported the new bill. Feminist groups said this bill gives worse punishments than for rapists and will hurt children who are hurt by family members.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called the bill crazy and said he would fight for the current laws.
Difficult words: abortion (ending a pregnancy), rapist (a person who forces someone to have sex with them), punishment (a penalty for breaking a law).

What are some of the reasons why feminist groups are against the new bill in Brazil's Congress that would treat abortions after 22 weeks as murder and give harsher punishments than for rapists?
