Global IT outage – level 2

23-07-2024 07:00

On Friday, a big tech failure caused problems worldwide.

Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, apologized because their antivirus software update for Microsoft Windows caused a global outage. This problem caused many flights to be canceled or delayed. Banks, hospitals, and payment systems had problems too. Even though experts already fixed the problem, they say that restarting all the affected computers will take a lot of work and time.

Microsoft said 8.5 million computers could have troubles because of the update. This could be the worst cyber event ever. The UK’s Cyber Security Centre and Germany’s IT agency warned that some people could take advantage of this event. This event showed how much we depend on technology. It will take time to fix everything and get back to normal.

Difficult words: failure (when something doesn’t happen or work the way it should), outage (a time when something doesn’t work), cyber (relating to computers and IT).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did Microsoft estimate regarding the number of computers that could have troubles due to the antivirus software update?
