A girl dies after drinking hot chocolate – level 2
21-08-2024 07:00
Hannah Jacobs, a 13-year-old girl, died after drinking hot chocolate from Costa Coffee in London.
Her mother told the staff about Hannah’s dairy allergy, but there was a mistake in communication, which caused a serious reaction that led to her death. This is similar to the 2016 death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse after eating a Pret a Manger baguette, which led to the creation of ‘Natasha’s Law’.
People are saying that food allergy training in restaurants is not good enough. They want stricter rules, like ‘Owen’s Law’, which would require menus to show all allergens clearly. They also want better training for staff and more education about allergies, starting in schools, to prevent these tragedies.
Difficult words: dairy (a product which contains milk), creation (making something exist), allergen (a substance which causes an allergic reaction).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What changes do people want to see in restaurant practices regarding food allergies following Hannah Jacobs' death?
