China spy in US government – level 3

09-09-2024 07:00

Linda Sun, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, has been charged with secretly acting as an agent for the Chinese government.

Along with her husband, Christopher Hu, Sun is accused of accepting millions of dollars, luxury gifts, and special deliveries of salted duck in exchange for her cooperation. Prosecutors allege the couple used this money to buy real estate and luxury cars. Sun’s actions reportedly included altering state documents and canceling meetings related to Taiwan, possibly giving China access to sensitive US state government affairs. The couple pleaded not guilty in a Brooklyn federal court. Sun was fired from her state position last year after the allegations of misconduct came to light.

This case has drawn significant attention due to the current high tensions between the US and China, particularly in light of other incidents such as the Chinese spy balloon. Lawmakers are now calling for further investigations.

Difficult words: alter (to change), plead (to argue a cause in a court of law), misconduct (wrong or illegal behavior).
