People in France protest against new PM – level 2

12-09-2024 07:00

Thousands of protesters in France marched against President Emmanuel Macron’s choice of a conservative prime minister, Michel Barnier.

The leftwing group France Unbowed led the protesters and said this decision was unfair and ignored the results of the recent elections. After the elections, no group won a majority in the parliament. The leftwing New Popular Front (NFP) got the most seats, but Macron didn’t choose their candidate for prime minister.

Barnier, who used to work as a Brexit negotiator, said he would try to bring all groups together. The protests may continue in the coming weeks.

Difficult words: conservative (a person who supports traditional values and ideas), ignore (to not pay attention to someone or something), majority (the greater number).

What is the reason for the protests in France against President Emmanuel Macron's choice of prime minister, Michel Barnier?
