What will happen with the Schengen Area? – level 2

16-09-2024 15:00

The Schengen Area is a border-free zone that connects 420 million people in Europe. There are problems because of recent events in Germany and Hungary.

After a Syrian national attacked people in Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz tightened border controls to reduce irregular migration. Hungary said it would send migrants to Belgium in retaliation for an EU fine, which worries the EU. Border checks are against the whole Schengen idea, which is to allow free movement between countries.

Since 2015, border controls increased, especially with the migration crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. The European Commission asked countries to stop these checks, but many don’t want to. Some people say that border controls are not effective anyway. Schengen is not falling apart yet, but recent actions show that keeping the area border-free is becoming harder.

Difficult words: tighten (to make something more secure or tight), irregular migration (crossing an international border without an official document that you can do it), retaliation (harming someone because they harmed you).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What recent events in Germany and Hungary have led to increased border controls in the Schengen Area, and how have these actions conflicted with the original idea of the Schengen Area?
