Marocco caves – level 2

18-09-2024 07:00

Bhalil is a small town in Morocco, famous for its old cave houses.

People lived in the caves since the 4th century. Many of the caves are still in use, while others attract tourists. Thami Anjam opened his cave to tourists, while his neighbor, Najia Sribet, still lives in her cave. There are challenges to living in caves, like dealing with humidity, but some caves have modern things like water and electricity.

Bhalil welcomes hundreds of tourists every year, and tourism helps the local economy. But people prefer modern houses now, so they use fewer caves as homes. The local group hopes the government will help repair the caves to protect Bhalil’s history.

Difficult words: cave (a large hole in a hill or mountain), in use (when you regularly use something), humidity (how much water is there in the air).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the challenges and modern conveniences associated with living in the cave houses of Bhalil, Morocco?
