How visualization helps you reach your goals – level 3

11-11-2024 07:00

Imagining actions toward a goal can improve your chances of achieving it. Muhammad Ali once said, ‘If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it.’

This concept called visualization in psychology involves vividly picturing steps toward success in your mind, activating areas of the brain as if you were performing them.

Athletes often use it, but studies show that it can help in everyday life, too. Researchers taught mental imagery to people in Colombia and Ethiopia, including those dealing with trauma. They found that visualizing future actions improved people’s earnings, job security, and living conditions. Visualization could also help people with mental illnesses, such as PTSD, by shifting their focus toward plans rather than past trauma. To try this yourself, start by relaxing and imagining each step toward your goal, including challenges. Over time, daily visualization can strengthen your brain’s response, helping you become more confident and motivated.

Difficult words: conceive (to think of something in the mind), concept (an abstract idea), visualization (the process of forming mental images), vividly (in a way that is very clear, powerful, and detailed in your mind).
