People and the night sky – level 2

11-12-2024 07:00

For most of history, people used the night sky for survival.

In Australia, the Milky Way shines brightly. Aboriginal people like the Wiradjuri watch stars to know the right time to collect food.  Polynesians were skilled navigators who traveled across the Pacific by learning the movement of stars. European sailors also used the stars for navigation. Ancient sites like Stonehenge and Newgrange helped track time, especially during the winter solstice, to organize important rituals.

Today, people use GPS instead of stars. Too much light at night blocks the stars for many people. Animals like birds, which rely on stars to navigate, also have problems. Still, the sky reminds us of how humans used it to find food, travel, and organize life.

Difficult words: survival (continuing to live), navigation (moving around a place), solstice (the longest or shortest day of the year).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the ways in which different cultures, such as the Aboriginal people and Polynesians, historically used the stars for survival?
