Polish children have shooting lessons – level 3

18-12-2024 07:00

In Poland, shooting lessons are now a mandatory part of the school curriculum to prepare children for potential future threats, such as a Russian attack.

Starting as young as 13 or 14, students practice assembling and operating weapons under supervision, though they use laser-based systems instead of live ammunition. This initiative reflects Poland’s concern over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its desire to instill early weapon-handling skills. Parents generally support these lessons, viewing them as patriotic and a way to prepare children to defend their country. Poland has liberal gun laws, and firearms are accessible to citizens; however, some critics worry about the potential for increased violence.

Students seem to enjoy the classes. They find shooting fun and exciting, though they acknowledge the difficulty of acting in real-life situations. Despite concerns, Poland’s government believes this training is essential for national safety and fostering readiness among its youth.

Difficult words: curriculum (subjects taught at school), patriotic (showing love for your country), foster (to encourage something).
