Du Bois documentary – level 3

23-12-2024 07:00

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, an influential scholar and activist, is celebrated in an animated documentary short exploring his life and work.

Du Bois’ book, The Souls of Black Folk, examines the dual identity of African Americans. A pioneer in anti-racist thought, Du Bois used data and infographics to challenge myths of Black inferiority. His science fiction story The Comet (1920) imagined a world where segregation briefly vanished in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event. His life in Atlanta during the 1906 race riots also inspired his writings on racial violence.

Du Bois was a founder of the NAACP, advocating for civil rights and exposing the color line that segregated African Americans. He introduced double consciousness, the sense of seeing oneself through others’ eyes, as a way to understand the divided African-American experience.

Difficult words: pioneer (a person who does something first), inferiority (being lower in status or quality than others), segregation (separation of groups), aftermath (the consequences or after-effects of an unpleasant event).

You can watch the video news lower on this page.

What is the concept of double consciousness introduced by Du Bois and how does it relate to the African-American experience?
