In the mid-1960s in Glasgow, people built six tower blocks. They were the tallest residential buildings in Europe, and they provided housing for almost 5,000 people.

The buildings solved the city’s housing problems, but they became rundown and vandalised. All six of the tower blocks were going to be brought down in a single demolition, but two of them were too strong – part of them survived the explosion.

Difficult words: tower block (a tall modern building of offices or flats), residential (for residents, for people to live in), rundown (not nice).
