A billion people are obese – level 2
06-03-2024 07:00
A recent study shows that over a billion people worldwide are obese. It is a growing trend.
880 million adults and 159 million children live with obesity. Tonga and American Samoa have the highest rates, and 70-80% of adults have this problem. In the UK, obesity rates doubled in the last 30 years. The World Health Organization urges governments and the food industry to help fight obesity, especially among young people.
The World Health Organization asked governments and food companies to act quickly. The authors of the study said that they were shocked by the rapid rise in obesity since 1990.
Difficult words: obese (very fat), obesity (when someone is very fat), urge (to press someone to do something), rapid (fast).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What actions do the authors of the study suggest to combat the startling increase in obesity rates since 1990?
