A bookstore gets a fine – level 2
20-07-2023 07:00
Hungary’s second-largest bookstore got a fine of almost 36,000 dollars.
The bookstore broke a law which bans LGBTQ books and films for children. The reason why the bookstore got the fine was that it didn’t wrap an LGBTQ novel in plastic. But the 2021 law says that all LGBTQ-themed books must be wrapped and sold separately, away from schools or churches. Prime Minister Viktor Orban supports these Christian-conservative ideas, but the EU criticizes them. Lira’s creative director said that the law was unclear and it affected many books, even school reading lists.
Some people are upset because this isn’t the first fine for a bookstore. But there is no legal way how the bookstore can change the situation.
Difficult words: conservative (supporting traditional ideas and beliefs), criticize (to say openly that something is not good).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are some of the legal implications of the 2021 law banning LGBTQ books and films for children?
