A jet travels faster than sound – level 2

31-01-2025 15:00

Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 broke the sound barrier during a test flight over the Mojave Desert.

The plane reached Mach 1.1, 1,360 kph, faster than the speed of sound. The pilot, Tristan Brandenburg, said it was the best flight ever. This test is part of Boom Supersonic’s plan to make a commercial supersonic plane called Overture. The Overture will carry 64-80 passengers and travel across the Atlantic in about 3.5 hours. Boom already has 130 orders from American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines.

Boom Supersonic is also building a factory in Greensboro, North Carolina, where they will make 66 Overture planes every year. This test flight shows that they are getting closer to bringing supersonic air travel back.

Difficult words: barrier (the limit), commercial (related to business), supersonic (faster than the speed of sound).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the name of the commercial supersonic plane that Boom Supersonic plans to make and how many passengers will it be able to carry?
