A tennis ball and a player’s mistake – level 3

19-03-2026 07:00

Daniil Medvedev won a tennis match against Jack Draper, but one moment caused a lot of talk. During a point, Draper moved his arms because he thought a ball was out. Medvedev continued to play but felt distracted by the movement.

After the point ended, Medvedev asked the umpire to check the video. The umpire decided that Draper’s gesture was a hindrance and gave the point to Medvedev. The crowd was not happy and booed the decision. After the match, journalists asked Medvedev if his action was fair. Medvedev said that he didn’t feel like a cheat. He admitted that he was only a little distracted, but he followed the rules of the game. He explained that he let the referee make the final choice.

Medvedev and Draper spoke at the net after the game. Draper felt that the distraction was not big enough to stop the point. However, both players still have a good relationship. Medvedev said he would accept any decision from the official.

Difficult words: umpire (a person who sits in a high chair in tennis to watch the game and make sure everyone follows the rules), gesture (a movement of the hands or body), hindrance (something that makes a situation difficult).

What judgment did the umpire make about Draper’s gesture that led to Medvedev being awarded the point?
