Amazon on Fire – level 1
28-08-2019 07:00
There are hundreds of fires in the Amazon rainforest. The rainforest covers over 2.5 million square miles. People use satellites to find the fires.
It is normal for there to be some fires in the Amazon. However, there are 83% more fires than last year. One expert on wildfires called it “a catastrophe of global proportions.”
Most of the rainforest is in Brazil. Brazil is trying to control the fires. However, the country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, says that he does not have enough resources. He is thinking about sending soldiers to help fight the fires.
Difficult words: a catastrophe of global proportions (a serious problem that affects the whole world), resources (money, people, cars, etc.).
