Apollo Quiboloy arrested – level 3

16-09-2024 07:00

Police in the Philippines have arrested Apollo Quiboloy, a celebrity televangelist wanted by both US and Philippine authorities for child sex trafficking.

Quiboloy surrendered after a two-week search of his 30-hectare estate in Davao. He and four other people will stand trial in Manila for child abuse, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. Philippine authorities currently have no plans to extradite him to the US. Quiboloy founded the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, and he claims over 7 million followers globally. He has close ties to former president Rodrigo Duterte, serving as his spiritual advisor.

In 2018, US authorities detained Quiboloy, which led to allegations of child trafficking, fraudulent marriages, and misuse of charity funds. His influence grew through religious support in politics, a powerful tool in the Philippines.

Difficult words: televangelist (preacher on TV), trafficking (buying and selling goods or people illegally), extradite (to send to another country for trial), fraudulent (false or fake).

What charges will Apollo Quiboloy and four other people stand trial for in Manila, and what is the current stance of Philippine authorities regarding his extradition to the US?
