Australia bans social media for children – level 2
03-12-2024 07:00
Australia will ban children under 16 from using social media in 2025.
Big platforms like Instagram and TikTok must stop young people from signing up. If they don’t, they will pay big fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars. The government says social media hurts children’s mental health, and there are examples of bullying and self-harm. 77% of Australians think the ban is a good idea. But some groups, like child rights supporters, say the law could be harmful. They believe children may find other dangerous places online.
Tech companies like Google and Meta think the ban is too fast and needs better rules. This law could also make other countries think about doing the same.
Difficult words: bullying (hurting someone many times), self-harm (when you hurt yourself as a way of dealing with very difficult feelings or things), supporter (a person who is actively interested in something or helps someone).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
