Australia’s dangerous highway – level 3

17-09-2024 15:00

The Bruce Highway in Queensland is considered dangerous due to its poor condition, especially in rural areas.

Many sections of the road remain undivided, which has caused numerous head-on collisions. More than 50% of the 149 fatalities from 2018 to 2022 were due to this type of accident. Families who have lost loved ones are pushing for urgent safety improvements. Betty Stuart, whose husband died in a triple fatal crash, believes these upgrades will prevent further tragedies. The Queensland government has announced a plan to invest in the highway, but the transport industry and the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) say that current measures are insufficient. Truck drivers frequently use this road and claim it is the worst national highway they have experienced. Residents and experts are advocating for the immediate introduction of dual carriageways and wider lanes to reduce the risk of accidents, calling it a death trap that requires action before more lives are lost.

Difficult words: head-on collision (an accident that happens when the front parts of two vehicles hit each other directly and with force), fatality (death), dual carriageway (a road that has an area of land in the middle).
