Brazil bans X – level 2
03-09-2024 07:00
Brazil banned X, the social media platform called Twitter in the past. The ban happened because X didn’t choose a new lawyer in time, as a top court ordered.
The judge said the platform must be suspended until it follows all court rules and pays its fines. The problem started when X refused to delete some content about Brazil’s 2022 attempted uprising.
Elon Musk, who owns X, criticized the decision. He said it is bad for free speech. In Brazil, 21.5 million people use X, so it is a big market for the platform. The ban will hurt many people, especially those who earn money through it. People who try using a VPN to access X may pay large fines.
Difficult words: suspended (stopped for some time), fine (money which you pay when you break a rule or law), uprising (when an organized group of people don’t want to accept the government and do things to stop it).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What did the judge order regarding X's compliance with court rules and fines?
