Brazil bans X – level 3

03-09-2024 07:00

X, formerly known as Twitter, has been banned in Brazil because it failed to appoint a new legal representative, as ordered by a Supreme Court judge.

The judge, Alexandre de Moraes, demanded the platform’s immediate suspension until it complies with all court orders and pays its fines. The issue began when X refused to remove content related to Brazil’s attempted insurrection in 2022, leading to a legal battle. Elon Musk, the owner of X, criticized the decision, claiming it was politically motivated and harmed free speech.

Brazil is one of X’s largest markets, with 21.5 million monthly users. The ban will severely impact users, especially those who rely on monetization. Any attempt to access X using a VPN could lead to large fines, making the situation extremely serious for many.

Difficult words: appoint (to choose someone officially for a job), insurrection (a violent uprising against an authority or government), monetization (changing something into money).
