Brazil’s philosopher of the forest – level 1
21-10-2024 15:00
This year, there is little rain in Brazil. There are many fires.
These events are making people listen to Indigenous activist Ailton Krenak. He wants people to think about nature. Krenak is a writer and journalist. People know him thanks to his books. They call him the philosopher of the forest. He fights for Indigenous people in Brazil.
Krenak’s family must leave their land 50 years ago because of logging. He says that not everything happens because of climate change. But people are making things worse, like the fires in Brazil. Krenak believes that people must understand their past. Without it, they cannot understand themselves.
Difficult words: activist (a person who fights for a change in politics or society), logging (cutting down trees), climate change (changes in usual weather because of the planet getting warmer).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is Ailton Krenak's role in advocating for Indigenous people and the environment in Brazil, and why does he believe understanding the past is crucial?
