Burkina Faso crisis – level 2

13-06-2024 07:00

The United Nations says that more than three million people left their homes this year in countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. This is because of fighting and climate change.

In Burkina Faso, armed groups killed over 20,000 people. People in shelters in the northeast need food, water, and medical help. Aid groups say that world leaders ignore this conflict.  Armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS killed many people, and the government cannot stop the violence. Almost a million people live in dangerous conditions.

There is little help for these crises in Africa. Burkina Faso has a military government since 2022. The leader wants to improve security, and the economy, and return to civilian rule, but people don’t believe it much.

Difficult words: shelter (a place to live safely), ignore (to not listen or give attention to something), violence (using force to hurt others).

What challenges are people in Burkina Faso facing due to the ongoing conflict and how is the government attempting to address them?
