Central Europe floods – level 3

17-09-2024 07:00

Flood alerts are currently in place across many parts of Central Europe due to heavy rainfall that has caused rivers to rise rapidly.

Countries such as Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland are particularly affected. Forecasters warn that the worst might still come as floodwaters move downstream and more rain is expected. In Romania, the situation is also critical, with some areas already experiencing flash floods that have led to multiple deaths and evacuations. Residents in Poland have been building sandbag barriers to prevent water from entering their homes, while the Prime Minister has shown his support by visiting some of the worst-hit areas. In Austria, some regions have been declared disaster zones.

Scientists suggest that these extreme weather events may become more frequent due to climate change, with erratic weather patterns becoming more common.

Difficult words: flash flood (a sudden local flood, typically due to heavy rain), erratic (irregular, unexpected).
