Chile farmers save plants – level 3

22-11-2024 07:00

In Chile, a group of farmers called seed guardians work to preserve ancient crops.

These crops, originally farmed by the indigenous Mapuche people, are at risk because of environmental changes, and farmers are choosing high-yield plants instead. The guardians collect, trade, and plant seeds to maintain genetic diversity. Ana Yanez, a seed guardian, explains that these traditional seeds are disappearing because they are no longer reproduced. This loss impacts their unique qualities. Agronomist Ricardo Pertuze emphasizes the importance of seed diversity for areas affected by climate change. When climates change, crops once suited to a region may fail, and new varieties must be developed. Without genetic diversity from older seeds, this adaptation becomes difficult.

The seed guardians are also connecting with high-end restaurants. Pablo Caceres, a chef and guardian, shares that while markets typically offer only a few tomato types, he now cultivates 26 varieties and expands every year. Their work keeps Chile’s agricultural heritage alive.

Difficult words: genetic diversity (the range of different inherited characteristics within a species), agronomist (an expert in the science of soil management and crop production), high-end (intended for people who want excellent quality products and who don’t mind how much they cost).
