China ends foreign adoptions – level 2

10-09-2024 07:00

China said it would stop foreign adoptions. This means that families in other countries will not be able to adopt Chinese children.

This decision is in line with international rules. In the past 30 years, foreign families adopted over 150,000 Chinese children, most children going to the US. A Chinese expert mentioned that this rule change could be because China’s population is shrinking, and they now have ways to help children in the country.

International adoptions paused in 2020. China believes children should stay in China because of cultural differences, and today, the country needs children more than in the past. Also, the Chinese government encourages families to adopt children instead of sending them overseas. People are more open to adopting children if they can’t have their own.

Difficult words: in line with (under control), shrink (to become smaller), encourage (to make someone more likely to do something).

What could be the reason behind China's decision to stop foreign adoptions, according to a Chinese expert?
