China underground lab – level 3

18-10-2024 07:00

In China, the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is nearly ready to start a significant experiment on neutrinos, mysterious subatomic particles.

This 300-million-dollar project is located 700 meters underground in Guangdong province, and it will help scientists understand how neutrinos change and possibly reveal new information about the universe. Neutrinos are created by nuclear reactions and can pass through matter, including our bodies, without any effect. Studying them could explain important processes from the early universe.

JUNO will observe neutrinos from nearby nuclear power plants and the sun. It may also study particles from Earth’s radioactive elements to help scientists understand the movement of tectonic plates. The project is expected to start in 2025 and will likely surpass the US-based Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), set to launch around 2030. However, funding issues in the US have delayed DUNE’s progress. JUNO aims to be a global leader in neutrino research, advancing both science and technology.

Difficult words: subatomic (smaller than atoms), surpass (to be better than), advance (to develop or improve).
