Danish PM attack – level 2

12-06-2024 07:00

Police arrested a 39-year-old Polish man who attacked Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The attack happened in Copenhagen. Frederiksen suffered a small neck injury. Danish police said the attacker was drunk and on drugs and didn’t know that he hurt the prime minister. Therefore, the police don’t think it was a political attack. She thanked everyone for their support and said that she needed time with her family. EU leaders criticized the attack. They said that it was bad for democracy. The Norwegian Prime Minister called it unacceptable.

The incident happened just before the EU elections. Danish officials said the attacker was a Polish citizen who lived in Denmark. This follows other recent attacks on politicians in Europe.

Difficult words: democracy (a system of government by all people), unacceptable (not pleasing or welcome), citizen (a person who belongs to a country).

What was the response of EU leaders to the attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and how did she address the incident?
