A 39-year-old Polish man was taken into custody for 12 days after assaulting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The incident occurred in a square in Copenhagen, causing Frederiksen to suffer a minor neck injury. The prime minister expressed her gratitude for the support she received. Several EU leaders condemned the attack, emphasizing its threat to democratic societies. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere called it unacceptable.

Danish police reported that the assailant was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and didn’t know the victim was the prime minister. This suggests that there was no political motive. The attack took place two days before the EU elections. Danish authorities confirmed the attacker is a Polish citizen who has been in Denmark for some time. Frederiksen was able to walk away after the incident; however, her official events have been canceled. This assault follows a series of attacks on politicians in Europe.
