David Hockney dies – level 2

18-06-2026 07:00

The famous British artist David Hockney died at the age of 88. He was one of the most important artists of modern times and a great leader of the pop art movement in the 1960s.

Hockney wanted his art to be joyful, so he always used very bright colors. He loved to try new technologies and made beautiful pictures using traditional paint, photographs, and even modern iPads. He is best known for his amazing paintings of swimming pools and sunny landscapes in California. In 2018, one of his pool paintings was sold at an auction for nearly 70 million pounds, which was a world record for a living artist.

Hockney grew up in a big, ordinary family but worked very hard every day of his life. He always said that painting gave him a reason to live, and he worked until the end.

Difficult words: pop art (a style of modern art which uses bright colors and shows everyday things from popular culture, like ads or music), joyful (full of happiness, pleasure, and good feelings), landscape (a painting, photo, or view of a wide area of outdoor nature, like mountains, fields, or forests).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did Hockney always use very bright colors, and what materials and technologies did he use to create his pictures?
