Deadly Elections – level 3
06-05-2019 07:00
Both presidential and legislative elections took place in Indonesia on the same day, April 17th. Ten days later after the elections, officials reported that over 270 election staff died, mostly from fatigue-related illnesses.
CNN reported that around six million election workers were involved in the dual elections – more than 1,800 of them were sick after helping with the elections and counting millions of ballots by hand.
One official said that the dual elections, combined with the pressure to deliver results quickly, could have been the reason of the deaths and illnesses.
Difficult words: legislative elections (elections of people who go to the parliament), fatigue (being extremely tired), ballot (a piece of paper which say for whom you voted).
