Empty Czech Capital – level 3
21-04-2020 07:00
The Czech Republic is a small landlocked country in Central Europe, and its capital, Prague, is one of Europe’s top tourist destinations. Its large historical center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The historic streets of Prague are usually filled with tourists at this time of year. However, a national state of emergency due to the coronavirus has left the Czech capital almost deserted.
Schools and most non-essential services in the country are closed, and people are forced to stay at home. If they need to leave home, they must wear a face mask. All of this has left Prague virtually empty, which is a very rare sight.
There are currently 6,500 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus, and 170 people have died from COVID-19. However, the government hopes that lockdown measures can be eased at the start of next week.
Difficult words: landlocked (a country that is surrounded by other countries, and it has no coast), deserted (empty of people), virtually (almost).
