England manager quits – level 2

22-07-2024 07:00

Gareth Southgate resigned as the England manager after losing the European Championship final to Spain, 2-1.

Three years ago, England lost to Italy on penalties in the final. Southgate, who is 53, led the team for eight years and 102 games. He said it was the honor of his life to manage England. After the loss to Spain, he said that he needed time to decide about his future. But now, he decided to leave.

Southgate was successful. He took England to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and two European Championship finals. But many people criticized him for England’s performance in the 2024 Euros. In his goodbye message, he thanked his players and staff and said he was proud of them. He hopes the team will keep doing well.

Difficult words: resign (to leave a job), honor (to show great respect), criticize (to speak about things someone did wrong).
