European roads are full of holidaymakers – level 3

01-08-2024 07:00

Traffic jams are causing chaos across Europe as holidaymakers set off for summer vacations.

In Germany, Croatia, and Slovenia, heavy traffic has slowed travel significantly. The German Automobile Club (ADAC) predicts these weeks will have some of the worst traffic jams of the year. Roads in Bavaria are particularly affected as tourists head to Italy and Austria. A German police spokesman reported 14 kilometers of traffic jams on the Bavarian A8 motorway to Austria. In Slovenia, traffic is worsening with the start of school holidays, and authorities have launched a campaign to remind drivers to take breaks and stay hydrated.

In Croatia, long queues are seen due to the high number of travelers and traffic accidents, with congestion reported between the Zadar East and Zadar Center junctions and at the Split ferry port. The Croatian Tourist Board is giving out water bottles and car air fresheners to tourists at major toll plazas and ferry ports.

Difficult words: congestion (overcrowding of vehicles causing slow movement), junction (a place where two or more roads or railway lines meet), toll plaza (a place on a road where there is a line of tollbooths and a driver stops to pay money before going onto a highway).
