Five journalists die in Mexico this year – level 2
17-02-2022 07:00
Heber López was a journalist, who worked in the city of Salina Cruz, Mexico. He often wrote about the crime and corruption of local politicians.
In 2019, López got death threats. They were anonymous letters that said that someone would kill him. López tells no one about the letters.
Last week, a white van stopped in front of López’s office. Two men came into the office and shot him. Reportedly, his 12-year-old son was with him, but he wasn’t hurt. Police arrested two men, and they found a gun.
López was the fifth journalist in Mexico who died this year. Over 145 journalists died in Mexico from 2000 to 2021. It was one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.
Difficult words: corruption (when politicians or other important people do something bad or illegal), anonymous (from or by a person whose name nobody knows), van (a big closed car which people usually use to carry things).
