German-Chinese relations – level 3
22-04-2024 07:00
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited China amidst growing tension between Europe and Beijing. Following a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, it was highlighted that the economic interests of both countries are closely linked. President Xi Jinping warned against protectionist measures and he advocated for free trade.
Last year, Germany adopted a strategy to reduce reliance on China. Scholz’s visit coincided with Iran’s attack on Israel, prompting him to call for restraint. He also addressed concerns about China’s support for Russia amid the Ukraine conflict. Germany is pragmatic in dealing with China, but real progress remains uncertain.
Difficult words: protectionist (favoring the restriction of imports), coincide (to occur at the same time), restraint (self-control or moderate behavior), pragmatic (dealing with things sensibly and realistically).
