Germany and asylum-seekers – level 1

02-09-2024 07:00

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visits Solingen. A terrible attack happens there last week.

A man kills three people with a knife. The police arrest the man. He is 26. He is from Syria. He asks for asylum in Germany, but he does not get it. He must go back to Bulgaria. Bulgaria is the country where he enters the EU. But it does not happen. The man stays in Germany. The Islamic State terror group says that they are behind the attack.

The attack starts protests across Germany. People want stricter rules about asylum and deportation. Scholz says that he will make deportations easier. He says that Germany must be a safe country for everyone.

Difficult words: asylum (safety), rule (something you must or must not do), deportation (making someone leave a country).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What does German Chancellor Olaf Scholz propose in response to the protests following the attack in Solingen?
